This book presents historical maps from throughout Europe in the years 1526 to 1897 held by the Public Record Office in London. The book was first published in English in 2000. The maps are beautiful and provide an overview, but are not, for the most part, intended to show the detail necessary to find a particular place. The book is perhaps best understood as a book about the development of map making. Each map is accompanied by a helpful short background text, for example, the results of the 1866 Austrian -- Prussian War, pp. 136 - 137. The introduction preceding the maps is an interesting brief review of European history from the glaciers to the beginning of WWI.
